かつては北アフリカで広くみられた「アトラスライオン」――しかし1922年、フランス人植民者により最後の1頭が狩猟の標的とされ、野生での絶滅が宣言された。

バーバリライオンとも呼ばれるこのライオンの亜種。驚くことに、モロッコ現国王の祖父にあたるムハンマド5世（Mohammed V）の私的動物園で飼育されていた個体がまだ生き残っていたのだ。この動物園では、国内の部族から王への忠誠の証として贈られた数頭のアトラスライオンが飼育されていた。
